Why Does It Matter? An Article Targeted at HS and UBC Students

In this assignment, our goal is to show the applications of calculus in a field in order to “to convince the reader that calculus is a very useful subject and is full of real-world applications demonstrating your knowledge of the subject” (Anwesh’s Instructions, 2021). Hence, I “may also write about what your interests are and how learning calculus will be useful in your academic and professional development” (Anwesh’s Instructions, 2021).

Through completing this assignment, I have demonstrated several key skills in writing and research. Firstly, I have shown the ability to tailor my writing style to a specific target audience. By recognizing that high school and university students may benefit from understanding the practical applications of calculus, I have adapted my language and tone to make the content accessible and engaging for this demographic.

Additionally, I have displayed proficiency in researching and presenting complex mathematical concepts. By exploring partial derivatives, Lagrange methods, and integrals, I have demonstrated a strong grasp of calculus theory and the ability to apply it to real-world scenarios. Through this process, I have honed my analytical skills and developed a deeper understanding of the interplay between calculus and economics.

Some skills I developed were

  1. Research skills: Through this assignment, I developed my research skills by exploring complex mathematical concepts and finding real-world applications for calculus. I learned how to use various sources to gather information and integrate it into my writing. I also developed the ability to critically evaluate sources and choose the most relevant and reliable information.
  2. Analytical skills: As I delved into the mathematical concepts of partial derivatives, Lagrange methods, and integrals, I developed my analytical skills. I learned how to break down complex problems and analyze them step-by-step to find solutions. I also developed the ability to apply mathematical concepts to real-world scenarios, which helped me understand the practical applications of calculus in economics.

Writing skills: This assignment helped me to develop my writing skills by challenging me to explain complex mathematical concepts in a way that is accessible and engaging for a specific target audience. I learned how to use clear and concise language to communicate ideas effectively. Furthermore, I have exhibited creativity in crafting hypothetical scenarios that showcase the practical applications of calculus. Drawing on my major in economics, I have developed compelling examples that illustrate how calculus can be used to solve problems and make predictions in both microeconomics and macroeconomics.

  1. My assignment has informal language as my target audiences are high school and university students who are wondering why calculus is important in our lives. Particularly, I focus on the field of economics (as it is my major and hence, my interest). I have created completely hypothetical situations regarding partial derivatives and Lagrange methods (Chapter 2) and Integrals (Chapter 3) to explicitly state some of the applications of calculus in microeconomics and macroeconomics.

    Overall, through the completion of this assignment, I have demonstrated a strong command of both mathematical concepts and writing skills, which will serve me well in future academic pursuits and in my chosen career path.
